Seminars will be offered on Saturday, March 21, 10:00AM-3:00PM, and Sunday, March 22, 9:00AM-3:00PM. 10:45AM-11:30AM: T2: Making a Smooth Transition from the Bike to the Run, Danny Dreyer, Founder and Head Coach of Chi Running and Chi Walking, author and ultra-marathoner One of the most commonly overlooked parts of a triathlon is transition. In this talk by running expert Danny Dreyer attendees will discover how to improve their transition from the bike to the run including: - What you need to do when you're still on the bike

11:30AM-12:30PM: "Perpetual-Motion" Freestyle: The Three Percent Solution, Terry Laughlin, world renowned swim coach and founder of Total Immersion The average swimmer only converts 3% of energy and "horsepower" into forward motion. 12:30PM-1:30PM: Cycling Training Equipment and Bicycle Fitting for the New Millennium; Ian Buchanan, Triathlete magazine columnist and co-owner, Fit Werx, and Dean Phillips, pro triathlete and co-owner, Fit Werx2 In this seminar attendees will learn about two of the most effective training tools in the new millennium, namely: - Power Meters: Coverage will include how a Power Meter works, the basics of how to use one and a comparison of the primary offerings on the market from SRM, PowerTap, iBike and Qarq to help cyclists decide which power meter is best for their needs

2:30PM-3:00PM: USAT Annual Membership Meeting, Pam Zawada, USAT Northeast Regional Council Chair USAT members and non-members alike are encouraged to attend this presentation. The Northeast Council is the face of USAT in the region. Their purpose is to provide services and programs to benefit USAT members in the region. This session will include a short introductory presentation about USAT in the region and then will be open to your questions and comments. 10:00AM-11:00AM: Fluid and Electrolyte Needs During Triathlon Racing, Jeff Godin, Ph.D., CSCS and founder of Blackstone Valley Human Performance Too often, athletes become dehydrated and/or suffer from electrolyte imbalance. Sometimes the consequences are mild, but frequently they can be debilitating and ruin a race. This presentation will discuss the physiologic effects of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance and provide guidelines to prevent it from happening to you. Guidelines will be specific to the distance of the race and based on current scientific literature
11:00AM-11:30AM: Training with a Heart Rate Monitor; Dorothy Hamburg, Exercise Physiologist and USAT Level II Expert Coach, Elite Coach of Joe Friel's Training Bible Coaching Not all athletes are created equally. And neither are your heart rate training zones. Knowing how to use the appropriate method for determining your Training Heart Rate (THR) Zones will make a significant difference in your workouts. This seminar will teach you the most common methods for calculating your THR Training Zones and how incorporating a training computer can help monitor the intensity of your training.
11:30AM-12:30PM: Heroes in the Midst: Finding Your Heroic Qualities through Multisport; Scott Tinley, 2x Ironman World Champion, respected educator and writer What is it about the over-used and ambiguous term "hero" that is innately attractive to us? And how does the role of the hero, real or imagined, affect our sporting experience? In this talk Scott Tinley will discuss our fascination with the idea of heroic endeavors and explain how and why we often confuse our interpretation of modern sports' heroic acts and individuals. Relating personal and professional anecdotes, both humorous and pathetic, he will make the case that there is something inherent within the structures and practices of multisport training and competition that might include a truer connotation of the "hero" than other mainstream or non-participatory sports.
12:30PM-1:15PM: Endurance Nutrition: Before, During and Post-racing; Nutrition is one of the most challenging things to figure out in endurance sports and in this panel discussion featuring nutrition experts, coaches and pros you will hear a lively discussion of right -- and wrong -- approaches to nutrition before, during and after racing. After a series of initial questions from the panel moderator, attendees will be invited to ask their own questions of the panel. 2:00PM-3:00PM: Avoiding Overuse Injuries, Dr. Mark Klion, Certified Orthopedic Surgeon, Medical Director for the NYC Triathlon and creator of the BodyworksMD DVD series Nothing is more frustrating than an injury that sidetracks or flat-out ends your season. Overuse injuries associated with running (e.g. plantar fasciitis, calf strains, achilles tendonitis) are those most commonly experienced by multisport athletes and in the seminar by Dr. Mark Klion attendees will learn common warning signs of impending injuries and how to manage them from activity modification to the concepts of rehabilitation.
